B1 Marketing materials and design

The purpose of marketing is to promote a person's or companies' products, event and help create a wider fan base. This is achieved by an individual carrying out primary or secondary research to gather the correct information on topics such as target audience, imagery and what has the most popularity within a specific group. Target audience within the music industry require research on the following: sex, age, and race this is important because it allows for a more direct approach for products to be sold as an example males and females are attracted to different appeals so if an artist has a bigger following of males, then they would be better off creating products portraying imagery and colour schemes directed to males. Age groups are another factor in marketing because it can determine the era of a music genre for instance older metal is going to be more prominent with the ages around 45-50 as opposed to newer styles which would appeal to ages 16-25. Race has some impact as an example there are usually more white people in rock and metal and more black people in hip-hop. It is important to find out the necessary statistics to create the correct products and the correct type of advertisement. Types of advertisement range from social media, blogs, and brands. Social media allows fans to keep up to date with the latest news and tours. Blogs have a similar effect but go into more detail about an individual's reasonings behind their work and about them. Brands create uniqueness for an individual which helps them create their own identity people can recognise brands are used with merchandise to help fans support whoever they buy merchandise from. All these factors increase the sales of an artist because the marketing amplifies the popularity and promotes their merchandise.

Marketing Materials

A blog is designed to deliver information to a viewer by creating a page the owner can add information about them and their work this means that anyone interested in someone's work can see what they have done. In my blog I have photographic evidence of me using a mixing desk and the audio of what I recorded in that session, I have a page dedicated to my lyrics and they have been seen by someone interested in using them.

I looked for another blog site called Feedspot this site requires a user to pay for an upgrade so that they can browse the blog, the blogsite I use (Blogger) is free, easy to use and is simple. There can be some issues making it difficult to use such as the text alignment does not function properly, but it does not cause any problems delivering the information to a viewer. I also reviewed a bands blog who are also using blogger and compared it to mine, they have images of their work and their lyrics they have a poor layout, but it is their fault and not the website, I have converted my notes into image files of my lyrics to display them on my blog. Abaddon's blog has a more professional layout of their blog, they have their blog full of their work. The bands band members, history and discography are all easily displayed and accessible.

I picked blogger because Google's security is difficult to breach, its free, easily accessible. After using blogger for a few weeks, I have been able to put my lyrics on display for people to see, the website is easy to use due to its simplicity and relation to Microsoft Word. Its security makes it a suitable place to create a blog and embed my EPK.

An Electronic Press Kit (EPK) is a bands history, videos, photos, music, art, and stories compacted in one place. This is relevant to me because I can put myself out there with information people may find interesting or important, I can also show my lyrics on my blog through my EPK.

Copyright is put in place to stop people from being able to steal someone else's work and pass it off as their own. It protects the artists creation when someone uses their work without permission, and it allows them to keep or take the royalties generated by the creation. This is also known as intellectual copyright which gives the owner some rights to the use of their work.

Conducting my own primary research using discussions with my peers I have been able to find out that the metal scene is not commonly listened unlick hip-hop which is listened to by the majority. Using secondary research, I have concluded the imagery, colour schemes and age groups of my target audience through websites found on google I have found that the metal scene is associated to people within the 16-34 age range, the colour schemes usually range from black and white to black and red accompanied by horror imagery. I have used this information to create my logo using the right information to correctly appeal to my intended audience, I used inspiration from a song by Papa Roach (Coffin Nail) to create the image.

This research will be useful when creating music, imagery, or brands, I used this website to easily create my logo https://www.freelogodesign.org/ it was free and allowed me to make my logo using already made images and shapes.

I’ve also created a website and a SoundCloud account to further promote myself and my music. I have used music I have created and uploaded them to my SoundCloud so that I can track my progression and get my music out there. My website is for the promotion of my music and myself because I can link my blog, SoundCloud and anything I am involved with all-in-one place which makes it more efficient to use my website link because everything is embedded within the website so I would not have to send links individually.
